Tillamook air museum, cheese factory, and Camp 18

Monday (it was still rainy) we drove down to Tillamook to see the air museum and the Tillamook cheese factory.  It wasn't exactly the best day for this, as the cheese factory was REALLY busy.  It was, after all, a holiday.  But we managed.  We stopped at a few view points along the way while we weren't getting dripped on.

This lighthouse was pretty far out in the ocean.  I zoomed and then cropped to get this picture.

First we went to the air museum, which wasn't very crowded......at least not yet.
We had a bite in their little restaurant and then went to see the planes.  It cost $9 each to go in.  First we watched part of a video about the history of the place.  It was built to house the huge airships that were used to patrol the pacific ocean for enemy subs.  This building could hold 6 very large airships plus 2 larger ones.  Originally there were 2 huge buildings, but one burned down.  After the airships were decommissioned, there were other businesses that rented the buildings.

This plane had 2 regular airplane engines and 2 jet engines

There were a few other pieces of military equipment there also.

The aliens are coming, the aliens are coming..............actually they're already here.
Yes, they are green and have antenni.

This old engine was getting all spruced up.

Instead of folding up, the wings of this plane folded toward the back of the plane.

Our next RV????

The front of the plane looks kinda funny.  It isn't frowning, but not really smiling either.

There was even a Japanese plane.
This plane was a stunt plane flown by "Swede" Ralston.

And last, but not least, this huge cargo plane called the Minnie Guppy.  The tail swung to the side to load cargo.  We could have taken a tour through this plane for $3 extra each.  We declined.

From here we went to the other end of town to the Tillamook cheese factory.  I didn't get any pictures there.....just some wonderful ice cream.........mint chocolate chip ice cream.........in a waffle cone.   Yummmmmmmmm.  Roger got chocolate peanut butter ice cream in a waffle cone.  We had to stand in line to order and pay and then get in another line to get our ice cream.  Then we went through the line to taste the different cheeses they make.  We thought about buying some fudge, but we would have had to stand in 2 different lines again.......so we decided we didn't really need any of the yummy looking fudge after all.  We did stop down the road to get some summer sausage.........not that either of us needed it, but it is awfully good and we don't eat it very often.  At least that was our reasoning, LOL.

Then we went to Camp 18.  It was a logging camp a long time ago and they have a lot of old logging machinery as well as a memorial for the men who died in the woods.  They had a beautiful rhododendron in my favorite color.  Of course that was the first thing that caught my eye.  I don't think Roger even saw it.
His eyes were on the machinery, some of which he operated when he worked in the woods.

There were a couple of beautifully carved benches outside the memorial building.

I have never seen a log truck like this before.........I guess it was before my time.  They were still using horses as well.

This explosives bunker had danger written on it, but someone also wrote "no naked visitors."

Had to get some more flowers in here........for a bit of a feminine touch don't ya know.

This is supposed to be an eagle, but the beak isn't quite right.  Oh well.

My logging equipment interpreter.
Concrete wheels were actually used, probably for an arch.

I call it a lumber picker upper.

It would be neat to live by a creek and have a water wheel.  You could generate electricity.

They had several carvings around the building that housed the restaurant and gift shop.
Paul Bunyan maybe?  I didn't see the blue ox anywhere though, so maybe not.

Maybe he traded Babe, the blue ox, in for a BIG brown bear?

This Indian doesn't look very happy, but then he is a bit cracked.  That must hurt.
I wanted to take this little guy home, but Roger gave me that LOOK.

What?  Someone threw a hatchet at a door and decided that it made a made a good doorknob?
Then we went inside to have something to eat.  Roger had a BLT and a bowl of clam chowder and I had one of their famous cinnamon rolls.............I should have taken a picture of it because it was as big as a dinner plate?  Sooooooo yummmmmmmy!  I didn't even eat quite 1/2 of it.
The end.
Until next time.............God bless.
